Nigeria’s Super Eagles are in second place in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers despite their 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening qualifying fixture on Friday.
The three-time African champions had to come from behind to secure maximum points against Madagascar and make a winning start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
However, Nigeria’s victory was not enough to send them to the top of Group L.
Guinea-Bissau currently lead the group after securing a 2-0 away victory over Tanzania in their opening fixture.
Franculino Djú broke the deadlock for Guinea-Bissau in the 33rd minute before Mama Baldé doubled the advantage in the 58th minute to seal all three points for the visitors.
The result means Guinea-Bissau sit above Nigeria on the Group L table after the opening round of matches.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next 2027 AFCON qualifier, with the Super Eagles set to face Guinea-Bissau away on Tuesday.
The encounter is expected to be an important early test for both sides as Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau battle for the top spot in Group L.
