Lagos Police Arrest Officer Over Viral Video About Peter Obi, Igbos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a police officer seen in a viral video making inappropriate and derogatory remarks about Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and people of Igbo extraction while travelling on public transport.

Naija News reports that the officer, identified as Osumah Frank, made several political and ethnic remarks in the video, which has circulated widely online.

In the footage, the officer claimed that Peter Obi could not become President of Nigeria because of his Igbo identity.

He also alleged that Abuja would be turned into a hub for internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, if Obi became president.

The officer further described Obi as too small to stand alongside President Bola Tinubu and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

He claimed that the 2027 presidential election would be a contest between Tinubu and Atiku, while asserting that Obi did not stand a chance.

Lagos Police Identify Officer

In a statement issued on Friday, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the officer in the viral video had been identified as Osumah Frank.

Adebisi said the Command had commenced appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in accordance with established Nigeria Police Force regulations.

She stressed that the comments made by the officer were expressed in his personal capacity and did not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.

Police Reaffirm Commitment To Professionalism

The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, had reiterated the Command’s expectation that all personnel maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.

According to Adebisi, wearing the police uniform comes with the responsibility to protect the dignity and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.

She added that the Lagos State Police Command would not condone conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the police.

The development comes as political activities and public debate intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with political figures and parties already positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
