OPay has dismissed a viral social media claim alleging that the fintech company has stopped using customers’ phone numbers as account numbers.
Naija News reports that the claim advised OPay customers whose accounts are linked to their phone numbers to visit agents and obtain new standard bank account numbers.
The claim was made by an user, Israel Gharee, who urged customers to update their OPay accounts.
“OPay is no longer using phone numbers as account numbers. They’re now issuing standard account numbers, so if you’re still using your phone number as your OPay account number, hurry to an OPay agent to get yours updated.”
However, an OPay official has described the claim as inaccurate.
Speaking to Premium Times, the official said OPay would communicate directly with customers through its verified communication channels if there were any significant changes to its account system.
“I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,” the official said on Sunday.
OPay Clarifies Account Number Claim
The clarification means customers should not rely on the viral social media post as an official directive to visit OPay agents to change their account numbers.
OPay has urged customers to rely on information published through its official communication channels for updates concerning its services and account operations.
OPay Previously Debunked Shutdown Rumour
The latest clarification comes weeks after OPay dismissed another viral claim suggesting that the digital payment platform would shut down operations from September 1, 2026.
The fintech company reassured customers that its services would continue uninterrupted, describing the shutdown report as false.
Customers are therefore advised to verify major announcements concerning their OPay accounts through the company’s official channels before taking action.
