BREAKING: Bungudu LGA Chairman Nura Abdullahi Regains Freedom After 61 Days in Bandits’ Captivity

The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Abdullahi, has regained his freedom after spending 61 days in the custody of bandits, bringing an end to his prolonged captivity following his abduction in July.

A family source confirmed his release to Channels Television, stating that the council chairman was freed alongside other victims abducted during the attack on his residence.

The victims reportedly regained their freedom on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, after spending more than two months in captivity. However, details surrounding the circumstances of their release remain unclear, including whether any ransom or other conditions were involved.

Abdullahi was abducted on July 25, 2026, when armed men attacked his residence in Bungudu town. The attackers reportedly overpowered his security detail before fleeing with the council chairman into nearby bushes.

Following the attack, troops from Operation FANSAN YAMMA responded after hearing gunshots and rescued five members of the chairman’s family, including his wife, mother and two children.

The assailants also abducted two other individuals during the incident: Halliru Soja, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, and Hussaini Naira, a point-of-sale (POS) operator. According to the report, four security personnel attached to the chairman were killed during the attack.

Abdullahi’s elder brother, Bello Abdullahi, who sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, later died from his injuries on August 4. At the time of his death, the Bungudu council chairman remained in the custody of his abductors.

The release of Nura Abdullahi and the other victims marks a significant development in the case, although further information about the operation that secured their freedom and the condition of those released is yet to be disclosed.
