Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, national unity and justice as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan made the appeal in his Independence Day message on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary of independence.
In the message, the former president described the forthcoming electoral season as a significant test of the country’s democratic maturity, calling on citizens to remain patriotic and committed to protecting Nigeria’s unity.
He urged Nigerians to ensure that their actions and political engagements promote peace, justice and national cohesion as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Jonathan said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, the former president acknowledged the numerous challenges the country has faced over the years, noting that its resilience has remained a major source of strength.
He encouraged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the country’s history, remain hopeful and work collectively towards a more prosperous future.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.
“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.
“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.
Jonathan Speaks On Nigeria’s Development Prospects
The former president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s development prospects, stressing that the country possesses significant human and natural resources capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
According to Jonathan, Nigeria’s diversity should be harnessed as a strength to promote national development, create opportunities and improve the living conditions of citizens.
He particularly encouraged young Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s prevailing social and economic challenges, urging them to remain courageous and actively participate in building a better nation.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development.
“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” Jonathan stated.
Former President Calls For Accountability And Good Governance
Jonathan also emphasised the importance of responsible leadership in achieving lasting peace, economic prosperity and national development.
He called on political leaders and public office holders across the country to demonstrate patriotism, accountability and a strong commitment to addressing Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.
The former president maintained that good governance, personal sacrifice and respect for the rule of law are essential to building a stable and equitable society.
He urged leaders at all levels to take responsibility for their actions and place the interests of the country above personal and political considerations.
“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan Urges Nigerians To Support National Unity
The former president further called on Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to national development by embracing peaceful coexistence, demonstrating patriotism and supporting initiatives that promote equality and security.
He stressed that building a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria requires collective responsibility, urging citizens to remain committed to national service and the wellbeing of future generations.
Jonathan said Nigerians must demonstrate greater dedication and sacrifice to create a country where peace, security, justice and equal opportunities are guaranteed.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
His message comes as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, with calls for peaceful political participation, responsible leadership, democratic accountability and national unity forming part of the country’s broader electoral discourse.
