The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The duo met with the Sultan at his palace in Sokoto State on Monday as part of their political consultations and engagements with traditional leaders.
Obi, Kwankwaso Meet Sultan In Sokoto
According to a statement issued by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s media team, Obi and Kwankwaso were accompanied by the NDC Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsu Haido, and other party members.
The delegation used the visit to discuss national issues, forthcoming political activities and their aspirations to lead Nigeria.
They also formally informed the Sultan of their political ambitions and sought his royal blessings.
Sultan Warns Politicians Against Divisive Campaigns
During the meeting, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar urged politicians and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly.
He warned against political actions capable of creating hatred, hostility and unnecessary tension among Nigerians.
The Sultan specifically cautioned politicians and their supporters against abusive language, insults and inflammatory statements, noting that such conduct could escalate tensions and potentially trigger violence in communities.
He reminded political actors that they have the constitutional right to present their manifestos, programmes and ideas to Nigerians and seek votes.
However, he urged them to exercise those rights within the law while respecting opposing candidates, political parties and citizens with different political views.
‘Nigeria’s Unity Must Come First’ – Sultan
The Sultan stressed that politicians should place Nigeria’s peace, unity and stability above their individual political interests.
According to him, political positions are temporary, while the unity and stability of the country are essential to its continued development.
He also urged political leaders seeking elective offices to lead by example and demonstrate the conduct they expect from their supporters.
The traditional ruler warned against campaigns degenerating into personal attacks, hostility or actions capable of dividing communities.
