JJ Gabriel Future: Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich Interested as Man Utd Exit Looms

JJ Gabriel’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with the 16-year-old and his family yet to make a final decision on his next move. However, a departure from Old Trafford is increasingly expected, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs showing strong interest in the highly rated attacking prospect.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are understood to retain significant interest in Gabriel, while Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also closely monitoring his situation.

Gabriel turned 16 on Tuesday, reaching the age at which European clubs can sign him to a professional contract. The teenager is also eligible to apply for a European passport through his parents, a development that could potentially allow him to move to a European club under a FIFA regulatory loophole.

According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United are prepared to consider legal action if Gabriel leaves for a European club using the loophole.

That threat, however, is not understood to be a major concern for Gabriel and his family as they assess their options.

Why JJ Gabriel could leave Manchester United

Gabriel was included in Manchester United’s 2026/27 squad photograph, but his inclusion does not appear to have changed the expectation that he will leave the club.

The squad photo was reportedly taken on September 8, when Gabriel was still at United and expected to be part of the first-team plans for the new season. Just days later, Gabriel and his family formally requested that he be allowed to leave.

The teenager remains registered with Manchester United, and the club has reportedly made several attempts to repair the relationship with Gabriel and his family. United have highlighted their duty of care towards such a young player and believe they have provided a clear pathway for his development.

Gabriel trained with the first team during pre-season and made his unofficial debut against Atletico Madrid. However, he played only eight to nine minutes after coming off the bench, which was reportedly below the expectations of his camp.

His family are understood to have wanted a more prominent first-team role.

Disagreement over Gabriel’s development

The disagreement between Gabriel’s camp and Manchester United appears to centre largely on his involvement with the first team.

Gabriel’s pre-season involvement came after he did not report for academy duty when expected. United’s U21 squad returned to Carrington a week before the senior team, but Gabriel’s family reportedly believed that he should only train with the first team and therefore did not send him back with the U21s.

United, meanwhile, had created an individual development plan for the youngster involving first-team coaches as well as the club’s medical and performance departments.

The club believed Gabriel was receiving significant attention and support designed to protect his long-term development.

Despite that, there was reportedly a difference of opinion over how quickly Gabriel should be introduced into senior football.

Gabriel wanted more first-team opportunities

Gabriel’s family reportedly wanted him to receive at least 20 minutes of action in a number of first-team fixtures, including the Champions League match against Sabah, the FA Cup clash with Brighton and the Premier League meeting with Bournemouth on October 25.

Those demands came before negotiations over a scholarship contract that could have helped secure Gabriel’s future at Manchester United.

Gabriel was not eligible for the first-team match against Sabah because he had not been included on United’s A-list. Instead, he featured for the club’s UEFA Youth League side against the Azerbaijani opposition and scored a hat-trick.

Now that Gabriel has turned 16, he would automatically become eligible for the club’s B-list and could be included in first-team matchday squads going forward.

His family are understood to believe that this represented an important opportunity for United to involve him at senior level.

Real Madrid and Barcelona among clubs interested

Gabriel’s situation has attracted considerable attention across Europe.

Talks have reportedly taken place between his representatives and clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid, while PSG and Bayern Munich are also understood to be monitoring developments.

Despite the growing interest, there has been no club-to-club contact with Manchester United regarding Gabriel’s availability.

United reportedly believe the tension has emerged because Gabriel’s family are focused on accelerating his career and potentially chasing historical milestones, while the club believes his long-term development should remain the priority.

The situation has become even more complicated because of the possibility that Gabriel could leave England for a European club after turning 16 if he obtains a European passport through one of his parents.

Manchester United could consider legal action

Manchester United reportedly believe they have done everything possible to convince Gabriel and his family that Old Trafford remains the right environment for his development.

The club can point to his first-team training opportunities, involvement in pre-season and appearance in the senior squad photograph as evidence of their commitment to his progression.

However, Sky Sports News has reported that United would consider legal action if a European club attempts to sign Gabriel by exploiting a FIFA loophole.

It is also understood that United believe promises made by another European club or prospective representatives could have influenced the change in attitude from Gabriel’s family.

For now, Gabriel remains a Manchester United player and is still registered with the club. Nevertheless, he has not trained with United since the dispute intensified.

With Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich all reportedly keeping an eye on the teenager, the likelihood of Gabriel remaining at Old Trafford appears increasingly remote.

The next stage of his career could therefore take him away from Manchester United and into one of Europe’s biggest football leagues.
