The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the electoral body will remain neutral in the conduct of the 2027 general election.
Amupitan stated that INEC has no preferred candidate or political party, stressing that the commission’s only interest is to uphold the will of Nigerian voters.
The INEC Chairman made the declaration during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of the commission’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
INEC Begins Early Preparations For 2027 Election
The visit formed part of activities ahead of INEC’s planned interactive meeting with staff and zonal readiness assessment for the 2027 General Election.
Amupitan described traditional institutions as critical stakeholders in the electoral process because of their influence and extensive grassroots reach.
He noted that elections represent a social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, adding that public confidence remains essential to the success of democracy.
According to the INEC Chairman, the commission began preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria.
He said INEC had moved away from last-minute preparations and was already testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems ahead of the 2027 polls.
‘INEC Has No Candidate Or Political Party’
Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to neutrality, fairness and transparency during the election.
“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria.”
He also urged the Emir to use his influence to counsel political parties, candidates and their supporters against violence and hate-driven campaigns.
The INEC Chairman said elections should not be treated as a “do-or-die affair” but as a peaceful process through which citizens express their choices.
Amupitan Warns Against Political Violence
Amupitan specifically appealed to traditional rulers to discourage young Nigerians from allowing themselves to be recruited for political violence.
He also encouraged eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process, including the forthcoming collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He stressed that an informed and engaged electorate is essential for a vibrant democratic system.
Emir Of Zazzau Urges INEC To Improve Election Logistics
Responding, the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, commended Amupitan for leading the INEC delegation to the palace and briefing stakeholders on preparations for the 2027 elections.
The Emir said the engagement had helped residents of the emirate gain a clearer understanding of the commission’s plans and the election timetable.
Bamalli urged INEC to ensure that sensitive electoral materials and equipment are delivered on time.
He also called for thorough testing of election devices before they are deployed to polling units.
The traditional ruler further highlighted the importance of adequate security, timely dissemination of electoral information and prompt announcement of results in strengthening public confidence.
He urged political parties and their supporters to act responsibly throughout the campaign period, particularly by avoiding hate speech and actions capable of undermining national unity.
